Black seed
(Nigella sativa) is valued for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, primarily driven by the bioactive compound thymoquinone. Research suggests it may help manage blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure, and reduce cholesterol, while also offering relief for respiratory conditions like asthma and hay fever. Additionally, it supports immune function, improves digestive health, and enhances skin and hair vitality by treating conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
You can consume black seed in several forms: ingest 1–2 grams of ground powder or 1 teaspoon of oil daily, often mixed with honey, yogurt, or water; apply the oil topically to the skin or scalp for healing and hair growth; or use the seeds as a culinary spice in breads, salads, and curries. For respiratory relief, inhaling vapors from hot water and black seed oil may help alleviate congestion.
